Barnet Galaxy 4 V 4 London Irish - (League)

On a very warm Sunday morning the first league game of the season for London Irish FC 1st team Vs Barnet Galaxy. Weather it was the weather or the late kick off, Irish started really slower and found themselves 1-0 down after just 5 mintues. A long ball from Barnets centre half saw their striker run through, Irish centre half Darren Morley could only do one thing and that was bring the striker down in the box, with a clumsier half hearted tackle. Barnets number 7 stood up and calmly sending the Irish keeper the wrong way. London Irish were still slow of the blocks and didn't seem like threatening the opposite goalie. Poor defending between Darren Morley and Billy O'Mahoney from a set play saw the ball drop to Galaxy's number 10, he turned and hit a wonder strike that left the Irish number 1 stranded. Strong words from Manager Mark Kirby was defiantly in order and with 10 minutes left till the end of the first half, a long free kick taken by the Irish number 1 saw Stefan Rees knock the ball on to John 'the touch' Mullen who went one on one with the keeper, Mullen rounded the on coming goalie and calmly slotted the ball into the net. With just 2 minutes left on the clock till the end of the half, neat play by Luke Tousson and Stefan Rees saw Trevor McCarthy smash the ball from a tight angle in of the post. At half time manager Mark Kirby gifted words of wisdom to his players and wanted his team to replicate the football he saw a week prior. The second half kicked off and within 3 minutes the Irish were 3-2 down. A long ball from the back deluded the Irish defensive and Morley for the 2nd time in the game pulled down Galaxy's centre forward. Barnets number 7 decided to put it in the same corner and the Irish keeper guessed the right way but his out stretched hand narrowly missing the ball. Manager Mark Kirby made 2 changes to try and affect the game. He brought himself on and other sub Austin Sweeney replacing John McCarthy and Luke Tousson. With 15 minutes on the clock Irish kept plugging away and half chances fell to the Irish front line. With the score still at 3-2, Irish didn't think they would pull 1 back. But a moment of true class from Trevor McCarthy, Mark Kirby and John Mullen would produce proberly the best goal of the season. A throw on deep into the Galaxy half saw McCarthy volley the ball to Kirby who took the ball on his chest and gave a one-two with the Irish winger who intern passed the ball forward to Mullen who neatly back healed it dead to a on coming Kirby who wiped the ball around the defending from 20 yards into the bottom corner, with the Galaxy keeper having no chance getting to the ball. 3-3 and the Irish pushing for the 4th goal and the winner! Good passing from Rees and Scelini gave Kirby a neat through ball on the left who swerved the ball to the back post to Mullen whose first touch resembled Dennis Bergkamp in his prime, saw him control the ball dead with his knee and he was left the job just to beat the goalie and that he didn't disappoint, with his left foot he calmly placed the ball around the goalie into the bottom corner. 4-3 with 2 minutes on the clock, manager Mark Kirby insisted everyone just clear the ball down field into the corners, but sloppy play from Matt Simmons gave Galaxy a corner, Galaxy slung everyone forward and from the corner a header was flicked on to a unmarked player who header the ball in of the cross bar. A disappointing end to a hard fought battle from the Irish.

 Hanwell Celtic 4 V 6 London Irish - (League)

London Irish first team restored the pride and glory into the club, with the first win in the league this campaign. With a draw and a defeat there other results it was third time lucky for London Irish FC. Second Team Manager Shane Gavin deputised for absent First Team Manager Mark Kirby in the away fixture to Hanwell Celtic FC. An injured Goalkeeper meant Manager Shane Gavin went between the sticks for his side.
Irish were buoyant before the game and looked the part with a new White away strip courtesy of Electrical firm Bright Spark Solutions. Irish attacked from Kick off but quick counter attack from Hanwell and a hopeful shot from 20 yards took a deflection of Irish defender Chris Phillips and lopped over Goalkeeper Gavin. But minutes later Man of the Match Gavin McLoughlin chased down a clearance which came of his back and went into the net. Hanwell were then awarded a penalty after the striker went over with no contact in the box. Stand in Keeper Shane Gavin saved the penalty pushing it onto the crossbar but sadly it fell to the feet of a Hanwell player who poked it home. Irish were then level again minutes later when a short McLoughlin pass let Trevor McCarthy let fly from 30 yards with a bouncing volley flying into the top corner. 2-2 with 15 minutes gone wasn't the norm. Hanwell weren't finished and a cross from the right evaded the defence and slow reactions meant Hanwell had all the time they wanted to stab the ball home. But minutes later Nick Otsuka was put thought by Gavin McLouglin and let fly with a turn and shot from the edge of the area getting the Irish level just as the first half came to a close. Hanwell were ahead for the fourth time in the game when Irish keeper was found too far of his line and was easy lobbed. But again Irish found a way back into the game when Trevor McCarthy scored his second  after a one two with Otuska and McCarthy hit his third with a long ball from Season Rahilly with 10 minutes and Irish were ahead for the first time and started to cruse. A late goal from Paul Fitzgerald after a weaving run doubled the Irish lead and a save from Gavin in the dieing minutes was enough to give the Irish a well deserved win.

London Irish 4 Vs 2 Barnet Galaxy - (League)

London Irish FC made very hard work of a valuable 4-2 League win over Barney Galaxy FC. From the kick off Irish dominated play against a lack luster 10 men Galaxy. The home team created a lot of early chances, but Galaxy's keeper was on fine form on this very cold November morning. In the first half the Irish back four stayed very strong with Luke Tousson and Darren Coyne playing especially well down both flanks. The first goal was going to come and it was just a matter of time before it did. Good work down the left from Coyne slipped in Paul Fitzgerald whose cross come shot flew into the top corner. Claims he didn't mean it, but he wasn't listening and insisted he meant it. Manager Mark Kirby ordered on that the tempo was kept high and not to let our guard down, within seven minutes Irish made it two. Excellent work down the right from Tousson and John McCarthy switched the ball in, the cross went right across the box deflecting of a Galaxy player for a corner, and Fitzgerald took the set piece and swung a delightful ball in for John Mullen who climbed highest to nod the ball in to make it 2 nil to the home side. It was very much one sided till half time with the Irish creating a lot of half chances, but not taking them was a key factor and the team was happy taking a lead into half time.

Irish Manager told everyone at half time not to lose focus and to keep passing the ball. However 5 minutes into the second period, a Rory Delap style long throw was dashed into the box and a number of bodies seem to be trying to go for the ball and deflecting of Irish Captain Darren Morley saw the ball trickle into his own net. Irish now needed a bit of fight from all, but the bogey playing surface dented Irish's chances of playing the football they usually do. A mistake from Steffan Rees in the middle of the park saw a through ball fall to Galaxy's big number 10 and he didn't disappoint the away team, neatly slotting the ball past London number 1 Brendon Mulroney 2-2. All of the London team needed a lift, so Irish Manager made a sub, John McCarthy off for Mickey O'Donoghue. The London team then started to pick it up and looked like a team that wanted to win. Matt Simmons and O'Donoghue worked hard down the wings for Irish but couldn't find that cutting edge to create a goal. Irish made another inspiring sub Paul Fitzgerald off for Billy O'Mahoney and within 5 minutes that decision was worthwhile, 10 minutes left and good work from Rees in the thick of the action, saw the ball drop to O'Mahoney just outside the box. A good first touch and a superb strike saw his effort fall right in the top corner, sending the Irish team into celebration. The Irish team still needed a big last 10 minutes and great work from Matt Simmons down the left who took on four Galaxy players, ran with the ball to the by line and cut the ball back to O'Donoghue whose first time strike went straight past the away keeper. Irish saw out the remaining minutes keeping the ball securing the win.

 NLO II 4 v 2 London Irish - (League)

London Irish FC lost 4-2 on Sunday against table toppers North London Olympians FC. One a morning that brought the fours seasons in the space of an hour, Snow, Rain, Wind and Sun Shine it was bound to be an interesting game. London Irish began strong and were one nil up after 10 minutes when Trevor McCarthy set Aiden Lynam away and the youngsters pace brought him beyond the last man he drew out the keeper and an outrageous chip from 25 yards out lobbed the stranded keeper and surprised the opposition who applauded his wonder goal. Irish battled on as the rain cleared the snow and turned the pitch into ice. Minutes before half time NLO midfielder let a fierce shot go from 25 yards and Irish Keeper Brendon Mulroony couldn't handle it and it slipped under his body. Irish came out for the second half onto a bog of a pitch and had to change there usual passing game to long balls so they could get over the bog in the middle of the park. But like the Irish tactics the opposition had the same idea and before they knew it an attack on the NLO defence turned and an NLO long ball into the box and a parry by Mulroony fell for NLO to slam home. NLO 5 minutes later scored a carbon copy with a long ball in and another parry by the Irish keeper fell to NLO to slam home. 3-1 down and soaked through Irish need to raise there game. Never out of it the wasted a few chances to get themselves into the game. Things began to get niggly and Irish left back gave a penalty away at the edge of the box. The NLO captain bent the free kick with pace and Mulroony couldn't handle it and it was 4-1. Irish couldn't believe they were losing a game they never looked out of and began to fight for everything. A furious drive down the left from Ryan Scullion brought a great save from NLO keeper. But Scullion got the goal he was after. A cross from Aidan Lynam fell to Ryan Scullion who made no mistake and riffled it home just inside the area. John Mullen came close as did Lynam but tired legs and a horrid surface was all that was left at the end as Irish crashed to defeat.

Soccer Stars 1 v 1 London Irish - (League)

London Irish were in disoppointing mood on Sunday when only a Joe Khan effort was blocked and fell to Captain Darren Morely to volley home an equaliser of what was an all over poor day when they sank to a 1-1 draw to bottom of the league Soccer Stars.

London Irish 1 v 0 North London Tara - (League)

London Irish FC maintained their promotion push with a scrappy 1-0 victory over North London Tara FC in the Hendon and District League One. Irish moved four places up the league, to fourth in the Division. After a long cup run and this being Irish first League game of 2009 anything was bound to happen. Irish reshuffled there defence after injury and absentees. Irish fielded a team with more pace then thier usual physical approach, too try and get an extra yard on the more physical Tara side. Aidan Lynam smashed the cross bar after 15 minutes and had four chances blocked by the courageous Tara defence. As the first half wore on Irish were beginning to think it wasn't thier day. Calming words at half time from Irish Manager Shane Gavin assured his side it was thier day and they would be victorious if they kept up the hard work. Irish continued to push on but again the Tara defence stood tall and Tara began to grow with confidence. But on the stroke of the hour mark a short pass from left back Matt Simmons found Gavin McLoughlin and a bit of individual brilliance from the wingers, spinning two defenders and with his weaker foot bending the ball into the top right hand corner of the Taras goal. Tara raised there game and stand in goalkeeper Mark Kirby kept the Irish in the game with a smart one handed save. Irish rang the changes and brought on the more physical John Mullen and Trevor McCarthy. As the game drew on it became more physical and cards where beginning to be shown. In the dying seconds of the game Tara could have been awarded a penalty when a sloppy challenge from Irish defender Luke Tousson on Taras Stephen Ruddy but the referee waved away any claims and the Irish hung on for the Victory.

London Irish 6 Vs 1 Dutch Lions FC - (League)

London Irish were triumphant on Sunday with a 6-1 league win over Dutch Lions FC. After two impressive performances in the last two league games the Irish were glowing with confidence. Within 5 minutes they were 1-0 up after a direct ball from goalkeeper Mark Kirby fell into the path of Nick Otsuka who finished with ease. Irish were dominating the ball at every chance and a ball out with to Gavin McLoughlin was fizzed across the 6 yard box for Trevor McCarthy to score an easy tap in for 2-0. A confidant Irish grew into there own and continued to bombard the Dutch Lions defence but began to waste opportunities they would normally convert. A dominating run from left back Matt Simmons weaving past three players let a fierce shot go from the edge of the box, the Dutch keeper pushed the shot into the path of striker Trevor McCarthy who fired the ball home for his second just before the end of the half. Irish Player/Manager Shane Gavin told his players to concentrate and see the game out with another clean sheet but more goals would come with the chances the team were creating. Straight from the centre Ireland pilled pressure again on the Dutch again. A 50 yard pass down the centre of the field from player/manager Shane Gavin was met by striker John Mullen whose one touch finish killed the game of as a spectacle. Irish were in cruise control when over confidence turned into sloppy passing and for the first time they put themselves under pressure and a point blank saved from goalkeeper Kirby kept his sheet clean. But on the counter attack Irish were always going to punish and they did just that when the ball broke to Mullen who fed McCarthy for his hat trick to make it 5-0. Minutes later McCarthy returned the favour to his strike partner and pulled the ball back for Mullen's second to finish with ease to make it 6-0. Dutch Lions were just playing for pride and a deep run from one of the Lions defenders got them a conciliation goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Highgate Albion 1 Vs 0 London Irish

London Irish suffered a shock 1-0 deafeat at Highgate albion. Having bombared the Highgate Goal for the entire game. Irish were left cursing the missed chances when a highgate player broke from midfield and fired the winner into the top corner with their only one shot of the game.

London Irish 4 Vs 2 Highgate Albion

London Irish Football Club kept there promotion hopes alive with a 4-2 win over Highgate Albion Football Club. On a blustery, freezing Sunday morning both sides needed a big win to keep their promotion hopes alive. The Irish didn't take long to get the passing game going and the midfield got them ticking. The Irish midfields constant pressure was too much for Highgate to handle and a neat lay off from Trevor McCarthy allowed Joseph Khan to unleash and 30 yard power drive which was too much for the Highgate number one to handle. A full of confidence Irish were starting to buzz and fizzing ball from Tom Henry was met by Aidan Lynam to tap in to an empty net. Irish weren't finished and just before the half Lynam beat his maker and swung a ball into the far post for Striker McCarthy to head home for his fourth goal in two games. With a 3-0 first half lead Irish emerged rather over confidant and two quick mistakes meant Highgate emerged 3-2 after only 10 minutes. It was back to the walls for Irish after a bombardment from Highgate who were in search of an equaliser. Irish soaked up the attack from Highgate and Highgate never got a decent shot off. A few changes from Irish Manager Shane Gavin meant Irish began doing what they do best and attack the opposition. The Irish midfield began ticking again and produced some great football. Tom Henry rounded things off with a delicate chip over the Highgate goalkeeper after a neat knock down from Striker John Mullen. Irish then saw out the game and waited for the final whistle.

Claddagh Ring 8 v 2 London Irish (League)

The second team were in competitive action for the first time and humbled and humiliated all in 45 minutes. London Irish FC started the game with 10 men after four players didn't show up for various reasons. Even with 10 men and they were still confident as they had such a good pre season campaign. For the first 45 minutes they battled hard and even though they were 2-0 down at the interval they had plenty of chances to still be in the game and still looked in the game. But a huge bit of luck which saw the Irish keeper clear the ball into the head of the oppositions forward and bounce into the goal meant 3-0 looked a larger task then 2-0 and then the London boys lost all belief and all shape. In the final 15 minutes of the game anyone watching the game would of witness how not to defend and how to score goals with only 4 touches. London Irish Conceded 5 goals in 15 minutes and scored two goals courtesy of a Matt O'Connoll lay off slamed home by Mark Kirby and a Kirby flick putting Striker Joe Cox in for an easy finish.

Bore Draw Take Two Vs Gwalia 2-2 - (League)

London Irish FC 2nd Team limped to a 2-2 draw in the League away to Gwalia FC after the drenched players couldn't find the heart or the legs to find the winner. Irish took the lead after 20 minutes when Anthony Davitt slid Shane Manogue in to take advantage of a defensive error to smash the ball home. Gwalia then got back into the game when Irish failed to following there men and it was easy for Gwalia to slot home just before half time. Manogue then returned the favour and found Anthony Davitt who sent Irish back into the lead with a dipping drive from the edge of the area into the bottom left hand corner. As the rain poured down on the playing fields in Willesden both teams tried to battle and the physical Gwalia found the equaliser again with a carbon copy of there first. Both teams heavy legged and with a few changes from both teams that tried to freshen things up were enough to find the winner. So they both had to settle for a point apiece.

London Irish 1 Vs 2 Colindale Athletic FC (League)

A new look 2nd team conducted the pace of the game from the start and looked like they could dominate all day. After 10 minutes a short pass from Anthony Davitt inside to Martin O'Donague who let a shoot go from 40 yard to test the goalkeepers reflexs but the keeper hadn't woken up and let the ball go through his legs. Irish 1-0 up. The Irish knocked the ball about with easy and freedom even though the young attacking four from Colindale Athletic FC buzzed around with no real threat. Irish saw out the half 1-0 ahead. Nothing really changed in the second half, both sides hitting the wood work. Until the 85th minute when Irish defender Jeff Lonergan pulled the shirt of Martin Murphy and the referee pointed to the spot. Dan Saunders cooly smahed the ball home from the spot, for Colindale Athletic FC. With seconds remaining the Irish defence fell to sleep and let Martin Murphy collect the ball take a touch and smash the ball home to give his team to victory. The Irish only had themselves to blame.

John Lewis FC 5 Vs 4 London Irish FC (League)

London Irish 2nds endured another defeat in the League, away to John Lewis FC on Sunday. After going 1-0 down after 15 minutes Irish still were in control of the tempo of the game. But after a wonder goal from John Lewis the Irish heads didn't drop. They battled on and Shane Gavin was brought down for a penalty after a sloppy challenge from John Lewis defender Sean Hussy. Captain Anthony Davitt stepped up and hammered the penalty past the John Lewis goalkeeper. Then the half came to a close. Irish came out fighting and for there efforts were awarded another Penalty when Shane was brought down again in the penalty area and Davitt stepped up and scored another penalty sending the keeper the wrong way. The Irish games rose, and before long were ahead for the first time when Martin O'Donaghue pulled the ball back for Davitt's long range shot which evaded the keeper and dropped into the goal with the help from a blinded keeper. The Irish were holding on and with 15 minutes to go John Lewis were pushing the London boys back and they were starting to tire. An Irish corner turned into a John Lewis counter attack and they broke in numbers and scored. With minutes remaining London Irish had another corner and pushed forward for the win but a poor corner meant another John Lewis counter attack and a carbon copy of the previous goal broke Irish hearts and meant the Irish still hadn't won there first game in the league this season.

Kenton Town 0 Vs 6 London Irish - (League)

London Irish FC romped to 6-0 win over Kenton Town FC in the Hendon and District Sunday League. The win saw the Irish move up 4 places in the Second Division. Irish flew out of the blocks and were soon 1-0 up when John Mullen was upended outside the box. Joseph Khan bent the free kick into the top corner of the goal. Irish then dominated the ball for the most of the second half but just couldn't find the final ball for the second until a long Gavin McLoughlin throw into the area was laid of by Nicky Otsuka for Luke Tousson to rattle in from close range. Irish then kept the ball and saw out the first half. Irish Manager Shane Gavin asked for his side to dominate the ball and keep there shape. Before long Irish were 3-0 up after McLoughlin sent John Mullen one on one with the Kenton keeper who scored with ease. Shane Gavin made changes. Anthony Davitt came on for Mullen and Jeff Longern on for Tousson. This gave the Irish a bit more legs and Irish were 4-0 up when Otsuka laid a ball back to Man of the Match Gavin McLoughlin to slam home from 25 yards with a furious left foot strike. Kenton were being put to the sword and Davitt slid home after McLoughlin fizzed a ball across the area. Davitt then got his second minutes later Otsuka pass beat the defence and the goalkeeper and Davitt had an open goal to slot the ball into to make the score 6-0.

London Irish 3 Vs 4 Gwalia FC - (League)

London Irish seconds were left with the bitter taste in there mouth after losing 4-3 in injury time against league opponoesnt Gwalia FC. After dominating the game and falling to convert so man chances that should have ended any hope for the away side being close to any fight back. Irish lead early when Danny put though Anthony Davitt and Irish looked in full control. Irish took their foot of the gass and were punished after Gwalia leveled. Ralph Scully restored the Irish lead after a neat one two with Danny in the middle of the park. But again Irish fell asleep and were punsished. Michael O'Donague restored the lead again with another pass from Danny. But poor defending and poor finishing cost them dearly when Gwalia hit them with two late sucker punches for the KO.

London Irish 3 Vs 2 Sudbury Inn FC - (League)

London Irish FC 2nd kept there promotion hopes alive with a late winner beating Sudbury Inn FC 3-2. With the weather delaying the game it was bound to be one of those days where anything could happen. Irish started slow and couldn't find there feet on this water soaked pitch. Sudbury at home bombarded the Irish defence early with long balls into the box and out wide. Irish captain Anthony Davitt calmed the Irish nerves and put his side in front with a storming finish after being put though by midfielder Steff Rees. Sudbury continued to work hard and bombard the Irish defence with long balls and it soon paid off with a long ball over the top was met by Sudbury striker James Pearce who used his pace to make space and fire home. The game began to get sloppy with the pitch cutting up due to the weather. A great switch in play by Ralph Scully was met by Nicky Otsuka who came in from the right of midfield to put the Irish back in the lead after half an hour. Sudbury weren't fazed by this at all and kept to the same tactics that they had been using from the start and the tactics paid off when another long ball from defence found goalscorer Pearce who jinked in behind the Irish defence and slid home the equaliser just before the half ended. Irish Manager Shane Gavin had a few harsh words to articulate to his side at the interval. Hoping to spark at bit more work rate that had been lacking in the first half. Irish came out with a bit more spirit about them and Sudbury keeper Darren Simms was forced into great saves from the Irish striking pair of Davitt and Micky O'Donague. The Irish defence stood strong and dealt with the aerial bombardment that cost them two goals in the first half. Surely it was only a matter of time before the Irish found the net again. Too many touches and missed place passes in the Sudbury final third meant the Irish started to become frustrated. Irish began long range pop shots which Sudbury keeper Simms had no problem dealing with. The referee announced there was 5 minutes remaining including injury time and Irish pushed on for the winner. A simple pass from Rees let Micky O'Donague danced around the Sudbury defence but with no way past, let a shot go from outside the area, and Keeper Simms dived to his right but couldn't get enough on the shot as it glided into the bottom right hand corner. That was bound to be the winner with minutes remaining Irish tasted more goals as Sudbury had held out for so long now looked excused. Scully had a shot blocked and a great run from sub Ryan Scullion were the remaining highlights of what was a much needed win for the Irish 2nds.

London Irish 4 Vs 1 Sudbury Inn FC - (League)

London Irish made it two wins out of two over Sudbury Inn in the league after a 4-1 Victory at Home in the League. Captain Anthony Davitt started the scoring after being put thought by M O'Donaghue. Minutes later Davitt returned the favour by putting O'Donaghue in to make it 2-0. Davitt then got this second assit when he slid Ralph Scully in to make it 3-0 before half time. Davitt was then on the score sheet again when O'Donaghue found him unmarked at the edge of the box. Sudbury got a conciasion late on.

London Irish 5 Vs 3 AFC Finchley - (League)

On a freezing Sunday morning on a barely playable pitch, the London Irish 2nd Team returned from the Christmas Break in a buoyant mood romping to a 5-3 victory over AFC Finchley in Division Two of the Hendon and District Sunday League. Even with some kamikaze Goalkeeping from the Irish Number 1 in the sticks he couldn't stop us going 1 down after 20 minutes had been played. Irish didn't let their heads drop and New Co-Manager Mark Armstrong(Lee) was on hand to level after a one on one with the Finchley keeper from a powerful goal kick.  With complete dominance for the remainder of the 1st half, that man Armstrong(MOD) was on hand to put Irish 2-1 up before the break with a simple but classy finish from a Matthew O'Connell corner.  A strong start to the 2nd half saw left winger Ryan Scullion finish off from a superb solo run after a pass from Armstong out of defence, but minutes later Irish sloppily gave away a basic goal by not closing down the attacking Finchley.  Fortunately Captain Anthony Davitt was on hand to restore order with his 15 goal of the Season after a lovely piece of football from the Irish and delightful final ball from Raplh Scully. Once again London Irish let Finchley back in the game, with another error from poor marking and sloppy defending. Right Full Back Jeff Lonergan was on hand to keep us ahead by clearing off the line with minutes remaining.  Tom Henry rounded the goal scoring off and made sure of the 3 points with a tidy finish from the edge of the box in the dying seconds from a lay back from O'Donague. This result puts London Irish 2nds second in the League and the hopes for promotion are now in there own hands.

London Irish 3 Vs 3 Kenton Town - (League)

London Irish 2nds Drew 3-3 in the League to Kenton Town FC. After being 2-0 down the Irish fought back to 3-2 with goals from Matt O'Connoll, Anthony Davitt and Tom Henry. But Kenton equalised in injury time to leave the Irish promotion push over for this Season.

London Irish 2 Vs 5 Colindale Athletic - (League)

London Irish Lost 5-2 in the League to Colindale Athletic FC.

Greenford Celtic FC 2 Vs 0 London Irish  - (League)

London Irish 2 Vs 1 Greenford Celtic FC - (League)

London Irish FC Reserves beat Greenford Celtic FC 2-1 to keep too secure their Division two status for next season. After a deflated start to the season Irish turned things around at Christmas to charge at the table but after a more recent slump the woos returned and they started looking over their shoulder once more. With games running out they needed to take 3 points from their remaining three games. Irish aware of the situation played a new formation and with a new spirit. They began to play like a team full of passion and determination and before long a bullish Kevin Browne bossed his way into the box to put them ahead. Irish confidence rose and rose and they began to dictate the game like a game at the top of the league. Anthony Davitt and John McCarthy wasted opportunities to put the game out of reach for the flying Irish side. Irish then fell asleep at a set piece and it cost them when the Greenford centre forward headed home. This lapse woke the Irish side up and they bombarded the Greenford sides goal again but to no avail. Time ticked away and the Irish side were starting to question had they squandered there chances of three points. In the final minutes Greenford became more physical and a late challenge on Anthony Davitt gave Irish a set piece to work from. Sean Rahilly stood over the ball and struck a thunderous drive from 40 yards into the bottom corner of the goal. With seconds remaining Irish held on for a precious win.

Sals Bar FC v London Irish FC (QT Final)

London Irish Football Club stormed into the semi finals of the Reg Ellis Cup with a 7-1 demolition of Primer League outfit Sals Bar Football Club. Irish were hungry for success and wanted to produce a masterful performance over a team from the league above them. A nervous first 20 minutes was played like a chess match with both sides feeling each other out. Irish then upped the tempo and great work down the right from the Dubliner Nick Otsuka gave Trevor McCarthy the chance to bag his sixth goal in four games. Irish continued to up there game and before long were two goals up when a jinking run down the left from Gavin McLoughlin beating two players before cutting back for Ryan Wharton-Jones to fire in from the edge of the box. At two nil Irish were cruising and Aidan Lynam and John Mullen missed a hat full of chances to put the game out of reach. Late in the second half a long range shot from Gavin McLoughlin was parried by the Sals goalkeeper Shane McAvoy and Joseph Khan pounced on the era and made it 3-0 before the half time whistle. Irish came out confidant and were hoping to make it a day to remember with a great result for the club. Striker Lynam was hoping to make up for missed chances in the first half and promised Player/Manager Shan Gavin a second half hat trick and the youngster delivered. He took his tally to 11 goals this season with a 10 minute hat trick. His first a scrappy finish after a Khan shot was blocked and Lynam poked the ball home. His second a bit of pure genius after being put away into space by Captain Darren Morley, he drew the keeper out and delicately chipped the ball over the out coming McAvoy the ball clipping of the inside of the post before floating into the goal. Irish were playing keep ball but everyone wanted a chance to score. Player/Manager wasted a good chance to head home. Lynam then got his prolonged hat tick after his pace sent him clear after a darting through ball from Stefan Rees made it easy for Lynam to take a touch and finish. Striker partner Mullen was looking to get himself on the score sheet and bulldozed into the box and finished with aggression after Lynam slid him in to make it 7-0 to the Irish. In the dying seconds Irish defence switch off and they conceded a scrappy goal from a corner. But the day wasn't to be taken away by the free flowing Irish style, who will be happy to face anyone in the semi final on this form.

London Irish FC v Gwalia  (Semi Final)

London Irish FC stormed into the Final of the Reg Ellis Cup Final with a dangerous 7-0 victory of Gwalia FC in the semi Final.

Mon Mome's 100-1 win on Saturday at Aintree was expected to be the shock of the weekend but the way the Irish brushed a side Semi Finalist Gwalia was just a surprising to everyone apart from Player/Manager Shane Gavin.

Irish were pumped up and wanted to get of to an early start and with power houses Trevor McCarthy and John Mullen leading the line the Irish side were always going to dominate up top. Trevor McCarthy broke the dead lock after 10 minutes, the 6ft 3inch star, who is in great form, was an absolute revelation beating the off side trap and gliding the ball home. McCarthy was too hot for Gwalia to handle and again was set away beating off side trap but was mauled down by the keeper but to every ones surprise the referee award a corner rather then a penalty. Nicky Otsuka swung the corner in and a scrabble in the box was directed on target but Gwalia handle on the line and the referee pointed to the spot and the Gwalia player was shown an expected Red Card. Mark Kirby stepped up to convert the penalty, 2-0 Irish. Trevor McCarthy had to then be withdrawn due to injury and the pacey Aidan Lynam took his place. Irish were cruising and began to turn on the magic as Gavin McLoughlin scored a beautiful team goal with one touch passing all the way from the back and John Mullen rounded of the half with a header from an Otsuka corner to make it 4-0. Irish were told by Manager Shane Gavin at half time to stay focused and not to get involved in what was bound to be a more physical second half. Irish continued to play their football and 10 minutes in, Mullen made it 5-0 with a drive from the edge of the area. If the game wasn't over at half time it sure was now. Irish decided to try and keep as much possession as they could and goals from Joseph Khan and Aidan Lynam rounded of the day in terrific fashion.

London Irish FC 1 v 0 Highgate (Final)

London Irish FC end their first season in competitive football with a very hard fought win against an organised Highgate Albion side. The match was played at Kingsbury Town FC local to both sides so a good turn out was expected. The match kicked of with the Irish playing with the wind down a slight slope, knowing an early lead would of giving the underdogs something to build upon. The earliest chance fell to young Aiden Lynam whose snap shot saw his effort hit the side netting. The Irish pressed on, and within long created another chance, good work in the midfield by Joe Kahn and Stefan Rees saw the ball get switched into the path of Lynam, the youngster ran through and tried to swerve the ball into the top right hand corner to see his effort narrowly miss the top right hand corner. Their was belief in the Irish team that saw a few other chances created but couldn't materialise into goals. Highgate had 1 shot on target in the first half which was a easy save for the Irish number 1 Declan McCarthy. A mistake by a Highgate player in the middle saw Gavin McLoughlin run down the left flank with 5 minutes to half time, the Irish eyes confident McLoughlin would sail the ball pass their keeper but cup final nerves got the better of the left winger and his effort smashed right into the oncoming keeper. Half time was with us and strong words from Manager Shane Gavin and his assistant player/coach Mark Kirby was needed to rally his side together and get the break through they deserve. The first 10 minutes of the second half was a shaker start for the Irish because of the strong wind and the aggressive play by Highgate. The Irish back 3 of Darren Coyne, Mark Kirby and Captain Darren Morley stayed very strong and any thing in or around the box the trio dealt with tremendously. Even though The Irish was pegged back deep in their half they knew they had to start playing the football they are famous for. The next good chance to fall to the Irish fell to striker Trevor McCarthy with his strong fan base roaring when his strike fly inches over the crossbar. Gavin shouting from the side to keep up the work rate and keep passing paid of 5 minutes late with arguably the best goal of the season, A move started from front to finish saw a pass from Kirby to Morley, with a bit of time, Morley passed the ball down the wing to Matt O'Connell, who jinked his way inside and slip a delightful ball through to Lynam, only 1 man to beat down the right side, All that was needed was a deliver beckham would of been proud of, and that it was. A super run in the box from man of the match Joe Kahn left him with the keeper to beat, he decided to strike the ball first time and it crashed the back of the net. The celebrations from the team and supporters showed just how much it meant to this group of players. Their was still 20 minutes left and it was going to be a nervy but passionate performance for the Irish players. With 5 minutes to go defender Mark Kirby produced the best tackle of the season, Highgate Albion broke down the left wing and a neat though ball saw their striker clear through on the left side of the goal. It was just Kirby in the box and he was chasing down the striker, Kirby stretched and slid full length, to just divert all power and accuracy, the ball fell right into the Irish number 1's hand. If the defender hadn't been on hand the cross was heading for 3 Highgate players behind him just to guide the ball into the net. With a minute to go a mirror image of the goal was created again with the same players involved in the move. All Khan had to do was hit the open goal, if it was nerves or just a lack of concentration he smashed the ball skywards and it flew straight over the crossbar and properly over the stand. The Final Whistle blew and scenes the Irish players will never forget, they had done it. Their first season together, saw them lift the double. It meant so much to this young group of players and you could see they were going to party the night away. Assistant player/coach Mark Kirby had this to say “I and Shane are so proud of this group of players, Highgate are a big strong physical side and we matched them in every department, they play in the league above so we knew we had our work cut out. Joe Khan was superb today and a great goal to finish of a great season for the youngster. I don't think their was 1 player who had a bad game today and it just shows afterwards how much it means to all of us."

London Irish 2nd Team v Dutch Lions FC [ Round 1 ]

On Sunday, London Irish 2nd team took on Dutch Lions FC in a Presidents Cup tie, with both teams looking to put together a good Cup run. The Irish started with the same XI that in recent weeks had put together a string of victories and assured performances, and were confident of continuing that trend against a side in the division above them. Both teams started brightly, with Irish's Ralph Scully going close with a well timed left foot volley, only to see it brush the Lions goal-post. Shortly after however, the Lions took the lead after a mistake from the usually reliable Irish keeper, who in recent weeks has been in impressive form. The Irish side rallied each other in an attempt to draw level, with the attacking trio of Michael O'Donoghue, Matthew O'Connell and Anthony Davitt looking to create something. This proved to be a daunting task, with the Lions defence looking more and more assured as the game went on. Irish were forced into an early change after Captain Anthony Davitt was forced off with an injury just before half-time. Something which may keep him out of action for up to 4 weeks. At the restart, Irish looked to take the game to the Lions, with full backs Mark Armstrong and Jeff Lonergan putting on impressive displays down either flank. However a mistake in the Irish defence allowed Lions to score their second and put breathing space between them and the Irish. Yet Irish head's didn't drop, and after good build up from the Irish midfield, Mathew O'Connell crossed, only to see a Lions defender put through his own net - Game On! Lions looked shell-shocked after seemingly being in control of the game, and pushed for a third to regain a two goal advantage. The opportunity presented itself via the penalty spot after a debatable refereeing decision. However, Irish Number 1 made up for his earlier error to tip the spot-kick wide of the post. The Irish had their tails up and searched for the equaliser, with Irish MOM Ralph Scully spreading the play at every opportunity and looking to create something from the midfield. It all proved to be in vain though, as the game was finished off in the dying minutes with a quick-fire counter attack through the heart of the Irish side, with a Lions striker finishing superbly.  The Irish must now turn their attention's back to league, with a forthcoming game against Greenford Celtic, and look to continue their recent impressive league form that has seen them climb to second in the table.

London Irish  v KM Motors FC [ QT Final]

London Irish FC stormed into the semi final of the presidents cup with a 7-5 victory over KM Motors FC. Both sides are riding high in Division One but they took time out to face each other in the league cup. Irish started sloppy and were 1-0 down after 10 minutes as the rain poured down Irish game rose. A Nicky Otsuka corner was prodded in by John Mullen. Joseph Khan then let a thunderous drive go from the edge of the area into te bottom corner to put Irish ahead. A ball over the top was met by Aidan Lynam who rounded the keeper and slotted the ball home. The Irish where then 4-1 up after a majestic lob from Gavin McLoughlin. Then some sloppy defending from the Irish back line resulted in a penalty for KM Motors who finished with ease and put them back into the game. Irish were then awarded a penalty of there own after Khan was taken down in the box. Mullen stepped up and made it 5-2 to the Irish. Seconds before the end of the half KM Motors were awarded a free kick at the edge of the area which they converted to make it 5-3 at the half. Straight from the kick off KM Motors scored as the midfielder ran from midfield and wasn't tracked to slam the ball home. The game became sloppy and goals became a passing phase. But late on the goals came again as Mullen completed his hat trick and Lynam pounced on his second to make it 7-4. KM Motors scored again in the closing moments but the game was over as a sceptical.

London Irish  v NLOFC [ Semi Final]

London Irish FC completed a superb couple of months with a well fought 2-1 victory at home to North London Olympians FC in the Semi Final of The Presidents Cup. With 8 wins out of 8 games London Irish FC were full of confidence going into Sundays Semi final. North London Olympians the only side the Irish haven't beat this season were always going to be a greater test then that of the last few weeks.

Irish were pumped up with the knowledge that the Olympians were the side that could be their boogie side and they didn't what that to blemish a now terrific season. A nervous start to the game with neither side wanting to make the first error was how it continued for the first 20 minutes. The Irish then started to dominate the ball and with home field advantage starting to show there game grew as did there presence on the field. A long ball from Captain Darren Morley out of defence was chased down by Aidan Lynam whose pace left his marker and he cut the ball back for strike partner John Mullen to curl the ball home from the edge of the box. Irish ran of celebrating could this be their time? could they be in two finals in the first season? Irish completely dominated the first half but failed to create more clear cut chances. With some knowledgeable words from Player/Manager Shane Gavin at half time, Irish had one foot in the final. Irish fought for everything in the second half and were beginning to show signs of tiring. On the hour a scrappy corner was cleared and fell to Joseph Khan who volleyed home from outside the box. That goal surely was enough to send Irish into another final. The Irish players fought and fought and the referee then signalled that the 90 minutes were up and there was 4 minutes of injury time to be played. This some how lifted the North London Olympians and in a minute they worked the ball well and slammed the ball home. Its was squeaky bum time for the Irish side but they began to fight for everything and saw out the game for the deserved win.

London Irish 4 v 2 Dutch Lions FC [Final]

London Irish Football Club won there first trophy in there first season on Sunday after capturing the Presidents Cup with a 4-2 victory over Dutch Lions FC.

After arriving at North Greenford United FC in buoyant mood Shane Gavins Irish side were buzzing waiting for the game to kick off. Irish started the faster of the two sides and should have been a few goals to the good in the opening 20 minutes but failed to convert some simple chances. Irish were starting to show there frustration and midfielder Steff Rees picked up a yellow card for kicking the ball away. Irish then lost their heads for 5 minutes and couldn’t find a pass. But with London Irish still dominating the ball and pilling the pressure on the Dutch Lions back line it was only a matter of time before they found the net. Great work in the centre found John Mullen who twisted and turn the defender before finding the bottom corner of the Dutch goal. It wasn’t long before the Irish were two goals up when an Aidan Lynam corner was nodded on by Mark Kirby for Nicky Otsuka to head home at the far post. Irish rounded of the half and possibly the game when Joe Khan sent Lynam through one on one with Dutch goalkeeper and there was only ever going to be one winner as Lynam finished with ease.

Irish came out for the second half with the game more then wrapped up but being 3-0 goals down the Dutch Lions had pride to play for which resulted in a more physical approach. But the Irish weren’t going to be rattled by the late tackles and continued to play their passing game. Then Mullen scored his second goal of the game when Lynam cut the ball back for Mullen to slide home. 4-0 up Irish was cruising and played keep ball but this frustrated the Dutch players. A Dutch player was sent off for pulling down Gavin McLoughlin and being the last Lions player back. Irish standards dropped in the last 10 minutes when they conceded a free kick and a penalty after two incorrect decisions from the match officials. The game ended 4-2 and the Irish were champions. One trophy down and one trophy too go. London Irish FC play their next final on Sunday 17th May at Kingsbury Town FC at 2.30pm Kick Off.

Middlesex Cup - Sunday Jr Cup

Sunday 05th October 2008

London Irish 10 v 1 Stockly Wasps (Round 1)

London Irish FC 1st team had their first game of the season on Sunday Vs Stockley Wasps FC in the First Round of the Middlesex Junior Cup. They didn't take long to get there season up and going!! The playing conditions wear awful to say the least but you could tell it was going to be a full-hearted affair with both teams looking to progress to the next round of the Middlesex Cup!

Manager Mark Kirby insisted his team play quick flowing football and his team didn't disappoint. Straight away the midfield were off Trevor McCarthy went down the left and played a lovely ball across the box, all it needed was a simple tap in by striker John Mullen but his effort rebounded of the post!! It didn't take long for the deadlock to be broken! Kirby switched the ball to McCarthy who swung the ball in and Nicky Otsuka just had the job to beat the goalie and that he did with real calm and Furness. London Irish then started to enjoy themselves and within the space of 3 minutes they were 2 nil up, a long kick from goalie Sean McCarthy saw Kirby go one and one with the goalie, he managed to poke the ball around the goalie with 2 defenders closing in. Kirby made it 3-0 2 minutes later with a calm finish from a tight angle from a pass from Joe Khan. Kirby was in fine form and made a darting run in-between the left back and centre half and Stefan Rees played a delightful ball in behind the defence which Kirby slotted the ball with his left foot pass the oncoming goalie! A lapse in concentration saw the Irish defence let a trough ball from Stockley Wasps gifted there number 7 a chance to pull 1 back and that he did, calmly lifting the ball over the Irish keeper. Good work down the right by Luke Tousson almost made a 2nd for Otsuka but couldn't find the back of the net with a cheeky chip that saw his effort slice against the post. A dangerous corner from Tousson gave Kirby his chance to make it 5-1 and grab his 4th and he couldn't miss from 6 yards out and smashed the ball into the back of the net. To the delight of Kirby and Tousson when the celebrated together in style. 5 minutes to half time and really clever movement from Mullen and Otsuka opened up space for Kirby to run onto and he slotted the ball pass the goalie and into the net. Scoring his 5th and making the score 6-1 at half time. Kirby didn't take any prisoners at half time and told his team he expected more from his newly built team. He knew the other teams were going to come out all guns blazing and he need his midfield and defence to stay strong!

With 2 minutes gone in the second period, great work and a cheeky one-two from Kirby and Tousson, saw Tousson make a superb run down the right flank and a teasing cross gave Trevor McCarthy a chance he couldn't miss to open his account on this cold wet morning. Good work from Kevin Browne and Stefan Rees saw a through ball fall to Kirby and he didn't disappoint, calmly slipping the ball in the near post! It was like a carnival atmosphere with the Irish enjoying themselves to the max with slick passing and build up play even a Premiership side would be proud of! Good work down the left from Billy O'Mahoney saw a delightful through ball to Kirby who unselfishly passed the ball to Trevor McCarthy to grab his brace and Irish taken the score to 9-1, and still 15 minutes on the clock!! Great build up play by Tousson and Rees gifted Kirby his 7th of the game with a clever through ball and Kirby was left one on one, he passed the ball around the goalie one way and jinked the other, just a on coming defender to beat, a dummy comitted the away keeper and Kirby passed the ball into a empty net! The rest of the game was seen out by great football from the Irish and given them a good backbone for the oncoming season!

Sunday 08th November 2008

Kempton Rangers 1 Vs 3 London Irish (Round 2)

London Irish FC emerged victories again Sunday in the 2nd round of the Middlesex Junior Cup away at Kempton Rangers FC.

London Irish flew out of the blocks and should have been two goals to the good in the first five minutes when Joe Khan came close on two occasions. It wasn't long until Irish did find the back of the net and it was midfielder Khan who got it. Great movement from his midfield partner Steff Rees opened up space for Khan to dominate and find the back of the net. Irish were then two goals up when a long free kick from Darren Morley was met by the head of Trevor McCarthy and a lay of by John Mullen meant Nicky Otsuka only had the keeper to beat which he did with easy. Irish left back Darren Coyne then sent Otsuka free and his pace left the defence behind he slotted the ball past the keeper but for all the brilliance the ball slammed of the post and cleared to safety. John Mullen then missed an easy chance to put the game out of reach but it wasn't to be. Trevor McCarthy then came close with a riffled free kick that just edged over the crossbar. Irish then saw out the first half with a game of keep ball which upset Kempton Rangers who tried to rattle the Irish with a few late challenges. The second half started like the first half ended and Kempton enforced a more physical approach to the game trying to take the passing game away from the Irish. Irish stood strong and good work from the Irish midfield who dominated the ball from the offset. Steff Rees gave Mullen the option to make up from an earlier miss and a piece of brilliance where Mullen flicked the ball over the his head and the on coming defender before turning and half volleying past the Kempton keeper into the back of the next. Irish with the game won dominated the ball with quick passing and great movement. Kempton then pulled a conciliation back in the last 5 minutes but Irish were never troubled and saw out the game victories. London Irish FC plays Cashen Rovers FC in the 3rd Round at Home on Sunday 7th December.

Sunday 7th December 2008

London Irish Vs Cashen Rovers (Round 3)

London Irish 1st team won an epic battle on Sunday in the Middlesex Cup. Irish faced Manager Shane Gavins former side Cashen Rovers football Club in the third round of this much sort after trophy. Aidan Lynam got the Irish off the mark after 10 minutes when he pounced on a through ball from Stand in Captain Joseph Khan. Cashen Rovers were up for a war and closed and hassled the passing game of the Irish. Irish kept the ball as much as they could and saw out the half. Cashens hassling finally paid off when a great strike from midfielder Kyle Owen equalised for the away side. Then a long shot from Cashen Rovers striker Wayne Wayne some how went through the legs of Irish Keeper Brendon Mulroony. The shock result meant Irish had to get out of 2nd gear which they had been in from the first whistle and actually perform. Irish pilled the pressure on Cashens defence and after a few close shaves and a chipped cross bar by Lynam Captain Khan scrambled the ball home. Irish went in search off the winner with a few minutes remaining but Cashen defence stood firm. Extra Time was the treat for the two sides and Irish were still flying after the late goal. They were soon ahead after 5 minutes when a ball out wide from Rees to Trevor McCarthy smashed a left footed strike from the edge of the area. But Cashen weren't finished and Ashley Delaney squeezed the ball past Mulroony to level once again. Cashen then went then found the lead with 10 minutes remaining after a bit of individual brilliance from Cashen striker JJ. Irish dug deep and the ball fell to Trevor McCarthy at the edge of the box thanks to hard work from McLoughlin and he bent a left footed strike in for a dramatic equaliser. With seconds remaining and penalties looming it was going to take something special to win the game. A quick break out of defence the ball bobbled to McLouglin who moved the ball out wide to Aidan Lynam who finished with a delicate finish past Cashen rovers keeper Bobby Andrews. Irish held on for the final seconds by keeping the ball and to send themselves into the quarter final of the Middlesex Cup.

London Irish Vs NLO FC (QT Finals)

London Irish FC crashed out of the Middlesex Cup Quarter Finals to North London Olympians, when the old football saying 'A game of two halves' couldn't be more true. Irish were straight out of the blocks and John Mullen should have put them one up in the first 60 seconds but instead of a snap shot decided to take a touch and giving the NLO FC defender time to come in and make a tackle. Irish continued to use there pace out wide to great effect and continued to create chances that they couldn't convert. Finally after half hour and 15 attempts on goal Irish broke the dead lock with a quick realise from Captain Darren Morley out wide to Gavin McLoughlin whose 60 yard solo run was finished of with a delicate finish past the out coming NLO goalkeeper. Irish continued to bombarded the NLO defence and strikers Mark Kirby and John Mullen just couldn't find the second goal which was sure to finish off the game. At half time London Irish FC Manager Shane Gavin congratulated his team for there first half efforts but hoped that they wouldn't rue the many missed chances they had in the first half. With nothing to loss and such a one sided first 45 minutes NLO came out of the blocks with nothing to lose. They caught Irish cold with a sucker punch after a long range hopefully shoot from out wide hit the post and hit the back of committed London Irish goalkeeper Sean McCarthy. Irish were stunned and before they could find there feet again found themselves 2-1 down after poor defending and awareness. Irish heads went down. How were they 2-1 down after 5 minutes and two shot on goal from the opposition in 55 minutes? The game went quiet and Irish failed to live up to there first half level. With 10 minutes remaining Irish pushed on for the equaliser but at no great effect and was caught on the counter twice finally losing the game a humiliating 4-1.
